Argentina has faced a major data breach attributed to the hacktivist group Chronus Team, which has exposed a structural weakness in the country's cybersecurity and sensitive data protection. This incident impacted high-value state institutions and exposed information related to identity, health, security, and public administration. The attack was particularly alarming as it occurred just as the government had toughened its foreign and security policy by declaring the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization. The attack attributed to Chronus Team was especially disturbing because it did not fit the classic profile of a sophisticated, high-secrecy threat, but rather that of an opportunistic actor focused on public exposure, data leaks, and reputational damage. This case proves that Argentina has not yet managed to transform its new structures into true digital resilience. At the end of 2025, a system reform separated cyberintelligence, which remained under the orbit of the SIDE through the Federal Cyberintelligence Agency, from cybersecurity, which became concentrated in the new National Cybersecurity Center (CNC), dependent on the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers and presented as the national authority on the matter. Despite the existence of new structures, decrees, new authorities, and a plan, the mega-leak showed that organic division does not automatically equate to effective protection. The central point is that Argentina continues to act with partial reflexes against a threat that is already systemic. A state that takes such a step must also demonstrate that it can properly protect its critical infrastructure, strategic information, and its citizens' data from retaliations, harassment operations, regional hacktivism, or hybrid threats. That is precisely where one of Argentina's greatest weaknesses lies: when a group does not need to deploy elite tools but merely combine exposed surfaces, loose controls, and public amplification to generate a national crisis, the problem is no longer just criminal.
